Hole lotta love

Why SFK's Stephanie Ashworth turned down Courtney Love.

When Something For Kate's bass player, Stephanie Ashworth, was offered a place in Courtney Love's band four years ago, she turned the gig down.

Why didn't she take the job with a successful international outfit such as Hole - one for which most bass players would swap their Alembic Series I? The question has been following Ashworth around like a stray puppy for years.

"I can't believe I'm still getting this, many years later," says Ashworth, who is clearly over the question. "There's not much to tell.

"I'm happy with the band I'm in. It's flattering to be asked, but you have to do what you enjoy doing. Paul [Dempsey] is a brilliant songwriter and I'm flattered to play music with him."

She says that early on in her career, she had to make a decision to pursue the music she loved over fame.

"If you were doing it for the wrong reasons - using music as a vehicle for something else, for fame or notoriety - then of course you would take it. I don't want to sound righteous, but you have to make a decision early on if music is a means to an end, or an end."

She says she has no regrets, and thinks people are interested in the question because playing with Hole seems glamorous.

"They're just a band who needed a bass player, I was busy with my band and didn't want to go to America. I don't have time to do two bands and I love the music we write."

Does she like Hole's music?

"All music is valid. I like the band I'm in."
